{January 06, 2010}   Success Or Statistic?

Which one will you be in network marketing?

The truth is the odds are against you; chances are you’ll be a statistic.

Hmmmmm bet the super star space commander upline guru that signed you up or wants to sign you up told you that did he/she?

Here are a few stats that may alarm you:

Did you know that 70,000 people sign up into a network marketing company EVERYDAY?

But did you know that 95% of the people that sign up into a network marketing company will quit within the first year?

WHY?

Well there are a lot or reasons, poor support, poor company, poor product, poor compensation plan, poor upline. But to me one of the biggest reasons is…

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LIED TO!!

Most people have been lied to from the get go.

Many of the people who are recruiting people into companies (hate that term recruiting) are lying to people and telling people what they want to hear so they will join their company.

Now on one had you can’t blame many of these people, there’re just doing what they were taught by the person that signed them up, and that’s usually some person with the recruit, recruit, recruit mentality…those are the people I blame.

Hey the great news is you DON’T have to be a statistic. You just need to be taught the correct way of building your business, but first you need to know some of the lies you’ll probably be told or already have been told.

My first and favorite lie:

Make a list of your friends and family because that’s who were calling first.

Hey upline line guy, are you crazy? That’s the last thing, no that’s what you NEVER do. Because of this one lie there are thousands of people that have been shunned by their families.

Your friends and family members turn off the lights and pretend there’re not home when the see you coming. Ring any bells?

By all means share your product or service with your family and friends but not the business opportunity. Many of your friends and family members are NOT looking for a business opportunity, the truth is most of your friends and family are going to spend more time discouraging you then helping you. But don’t get mad at them they think there’re protecting you, ignore them and build your business.

Let them come to you, once you become successful in your business, your friends and family will notice and then they’ll ask you what you’re doing.

Here’s a tip. This is your business and you DON’T want everyone in your business that includes your family and friends. Only share your business opportunity to people who have raised their hand to you and say. “I’m interested” or “Show me what you’re doing”.

Lie number two;

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit. You need to make a 100 phone calls a day and remember for every NO you get you’re one step close to a YES.

I would love to track down the putz that said this. Let me ask you a question.

How many times do you like hearing the word NO?

How much do you like being on the phone every day hearing the word NO?

I think it’s safe to say, “You don’t like it very much”

The word NO has taken so many good people out of this business. Here is an example my mentor shared with me and it really hit home for me.

Duffy you’ve set up candles, soft music some good wine a great dinner a bit of hugging and kissing then your spouse says “NO”. All right just 99 more times and you’ll get lucky.

That put things into perspective for me real fast.

Did you know that 90% of the population is sales resistant, no wonder you’re hearing the word NO so much.

And some knucklehead say’s NO is a good thing. Moving on.

Lie number 3,

If you have no warm market you need to spend money and buy leads.

WRONG!! You DO NOT have to buy leads. Personally you’re just wasting your money. There’re people spending hundreds of dollars every month for leads. STOP IT!!!

Remember a bought lead is a bought lead. I don’t care if you paid $5 or 5 cents a lead is a lead. When you call these leads chances are they don’t remember what forum they filled out or the person gets upset because you called them.

Once you truly understand that people are not numbers, they have goals and dreams just like you. And they’re real people. And just like you they don’t want to be lied too and just like you they want a true opportunity to fulfill those dreams and goals. If you get just this you’ll go very, very far in this business.

Network marketing is a Relationship Business NOT a Sales Business. As soon as you understand that you’ll have people saying to you “PLEASE sponsor me into your business”

Until then you’re DEAD in the water.

I have NEVER bought a lead with my network marketing company and I don’t spend 10 hours a day making phone calls, I have people contacting me everyday asking me about my business.

If you had people calling you how do you think your lead calls would turn out compared to you calling people? Please tell me I don’t have to answer that for you.

For those of you buying leads stop wasting your money, prospects are everywhere.

I have tons of ways of getting leads for free, but here’s one tip that will reveal prospects to you everyday.

First LISTEN to people, that’s the most important thing you need to do. You’ve heard this “One mouth two ears” Listen twice as much as you speak.

Ok how do you determine if someone is a prospect?

Let’s say you have a company that provides a nutritional product that helps with weight loss. And now lets say you’re talking to someone and they are complaining about how they can’t lose weight.

All you have to say to this person is this: “Have you ever thought about doing something about it”?

If they say “YES” you have a prospect, depending on the time and place this person has just given you permission to provide them with a presentation of your product. You could give them your business card, send them to a web site or provide them some brochures about your product. Or ask them for there contact info so you could send them some info later.

If the person says “NO”…you say, “OK”.

THEY ARE NOT A PROSPECT, REPEAT NOT A PROSPECT… forget about them, move on and keep listening.

This is just one-way there’re lots of other ways to find prospects. The point is you never have to buy leads to find prospects.

It’s a shame that so many lies are being told just to get people into a business, just because the rest of the world is doing it doesn’t mean you have to. Tell people the truth, listen to them and truly hear what they are saying. Build relationships; help a person, that’s how you build a business.

If you can help them GREAT if not that’s ok too. Not everyone is suited to fit into your business; and you would be a fool to think so.

Personally I would rather have 10 people that wanted to be in my business and that I told the truth to from the get go, then a 100 people I told what ever they wanted to hear so they would join my business.

Until Next Time

You’ll very probably have seen mention of Mr. Naveen Jain the CEO as well as co-founder of Intelius, Inc. the company providing background checks and public records services. As well as gaining a position on the Forbes list “400 Richest in America” in 2000, this enterprising businessman has been honored with multiple choice awards, foremost the Albert Einstein Technology Medal, the WSA Industry Achievement Award, and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. But that is definitely not the end of the story. That’s because Naveen Jain and his family are every bit as impassioned about philanthropy and will strive to assist needy people whenever the opportunity arises. Today’s kids doubtlessly are mankind’s most treasurable resource. They are moreover a crucial inspiration for this enterprising man, and he uses every opportunity he happens to encounter to support them. This, obviously, is why he is persistently leveraging every opening available to support young people who are needy, if at all possible. Consequently, Naveen Jain, his family and his staff at Intelius dedicate their time to many different charities like Child Rights and You (CRY), the Children’s Hospital, and Hopelink. They will provide significant pecuniary support but most importantly they pledge their time and effort to the most disadvantaged and at risk children. He also gives aid to the Children’s Hospital, being intent on improving children’s health, too. Because Naveen Jain is an alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur and the Indian Institute of Technology, it’s hardly astounding that education constitutes a vital pivot point in his humanitarian endeavors. This also includes movements and good causes that cover the entire spectrum from neighborhood programs to the international. Accordingly, Intelius and its co-founder are involved in supporting voluntary entities and foundations such as the University Preparatory Academy, United Way and the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club. Getting food to the underdogs of the world is another central aim for Jain and those around him and it is of no particular interest in the least to him whether it is a baby in Nepal or Peru, or an elderly destitute woman from Paris or New York in need of aid. Although he is cognizant that the project of getting food for all the planet’s unnourished is an eminently superhuman one, he also recognizes that the irresolvable can factually become realizable when everybody toils together. If this business leader actually achieves his goals, there will be a certain ending to impoverishment and starvation everywhere in the future. People may be of the opinion that as the man in control of a very successful enterprise in addition to being a dedicated husband and father would leave practically no room for donating and support. All the same, he ensures that all of his benevolent efforts is given as much aid as he can realistically marshal. This doggedly philanthropic businessman is undoubtedly much more than just any ordinary business maverick. In actual fact, he is an exceptional citizen and a remarkable community champion.

{July 20, 2009}   A Father’s Day Special: a Exquisite Report of a Brave Father Who Left Unforgettable Marks

The storey we all wanted to listen as children was the one about dad that would explain why his face was covered in what we as kids saw as millions of small dents and scratches of which I will tell you all about closer to the finish of my tribute to the greatest dad a daughter could ever have had. His dying at the early age of fifty four fell as a shock especially when his designation for the infirmary was to take a plaster cast removed only to have him dropped dead in the waiting room.

Although our his death was sudden, the tenderest of memories still held a compelling presence in my mind for 26 years. If I could wrench the clock back - I would tell him how sorry I was for the times I took him for granted but unfortunately that self-reproach will be carried to my grave where I know being the good man that he was will be waiting for me at the pearly gates with open arms full of forgiveness.

They say the good die early and that is what has aided to comfort the bitterness I experienced towards the man up above for taking dad so soon.People see the word “special” in many ways. So what do I see in my father that makes him to a greater extent special than the others?

Dad functioned in the armed forces for thirty-four years along side an army of Fathers Day Gifts. He was designated in Hong Kong when this story took place. The alarm triggered into motion the evacuation of folks living outside the camp to seek asylum in the camp immediately.

Eight of us were jammed in the rear of an army wagon with only pillows used for protection. We readily followed the order to keep our heads down - the Chinese riot mobs were coming out up from the trenches that lined the road back to the camp amply armed with all kinds of killing instruments - twenty one stones gone into the wagon on the journey back to camp.

The convoy that followed now stood as burning wrecks. You can only guess what the truck and the driver looked like when a onslaught of boulders were cast into the front portion of the wagon. Army officers didn’t give a medal of bravery to the driver. The reason why was because he should not have been driving at the time, so all the congratulations went to the wrong man sitting up front.

I often wonder nowadays this day would we all have got out alive if the boot was on the other foot, if those drivers did not follow the rules.

The outcome of that terrifying day was a truck with no windshield, a driver with no face and 8 people who lived to recount the story. Now, you understand the cause why the marks on my father’s face scarred us for life.

{July 16, 2008}   Time to Hire a Professional Networker?

It used to be that people said that there was 6 degrees of separation between everyone. Many people know that Kevin Bacon game that people play to prove it. They name a film that such and such played on with Kevin, who worked with your cousins, friends’ uncles’ gardener, and BOOM.. there you have it! Someone who you know who knows someone who knows Kevin Bacon! There is also the Hollywood version that makes a point to prove that everyone in Hollywood is connect to Kevin Bacon through any amount of projects that they’d worked on. You get the point!

I’m finding more and more that networking is one of the greatest business skills of all time. It can move mountains and create opportunities that didn’t exist whatsoever until you met that special person. And now with the power of the internet, the world has shrunk so that everyone is the neighbor of one another. You can literally network on the computer with people to be in touch with the PERSON who you need to meet. It’s mind boggling!

We’re beating at the door of the good ol’ boys’ club and it feels GREAT!

But how do you break in? How do you get it started? Well, one way I’ve found is to actually HIRE a Professional Networker?

What is that you ask, and how is that different from a publicist or a marketing person? In my mind, Public Relations is how to position yourself or a company in the media or to the public. These people can be excellent sources for you. They’re going to do articles highlighting you or send press releases about you or make calls for you.

The marketing people will do similar work but they’ll do more repeated calling and branding of you or the company.

The Professional Networker? They position themselves anywhere and let people know how great you are. If and when they meet someone that fits the perfect client profile, they’ll introduce you as a friend to friend contact. It’s a lot less intimidating and a lot more informal. You have to select someone who is a natural networker. Pick a person who is friends with the rich, famous and the powerful. It doesn’t have to be the rich and powerful, just someone who isn’t afraid to meet them!

I’m one of those self made people I guess. I didn’t have any connections that got me launched doing anything that I’ve done, but I was blessed with a good education, supportive parents and a mom who pushed me out the door when I graduated, but besides that, I’ve been the one who has created and maintained my contacts throughout the years.

Just on one trip alone, the people I’ve met can help me or my clients a tremendous amount! I met the president of the cell phone company that I need to get a new contract and phone from. I met the president of the textile firm who might invest in another of my friend’s business who is raising money for his business. I put the textile president in touch with my friend Josh, the Broadway producer, who asked if he’d be interested in investing in a Broadway play.

Back at home, I am actually paid as a professional networker. I hook people up for other people when they are trying to find people to sell to or to recruit. I’m also being considered to be hired for this position by a recruiting firm.

The techniques I use are exactly the same as when I was a lecture agent years ago. My job was to put two people or two companies together. The object is to find out who needs what and who they need or want to meet. As I get to know the companies and their needs, I automatically can draw from a mental list of people who would fit into the role that they are seeking. I’m not a full time recruiter, but I do possess the same skills and have been paid when I’ve made some decent hook ups.

I happen to know a lot of people. I know people in nearly every job profession across the board. I know or have met people all across the country and most of the people are always willing to meet someone new.

The skills are teachable, learnable and definitely usable! It takes a lot of energy and follow-up but it’s worth it in the long run. Here are some of the valuable hook ups I’ve made; some have brought me finders fees, some not but here they are:

• I’ve gotten up and coming stars an agent. One turned into a regular gig on the Rosanne Barr show after I got him an agent. Others have made money for years from their public lectures.

• I’ve gotten many people on radio and TV because I introduced them to the hosts or the producers or the publicists

• I’ve helped financial companies recruit sales people

• I’ve helped financial professionals meet new clients

• I’ve introduced men to women and women to men. (There’s at least 1 marriage but many great relationships were established!)

• I’ve introduced two TV news anchors in the same city who are on competing stations and I’ve never even been to their city!

• I’ve helped friends and clients get tickets to great events, meet top notch lawyers, meet business partners, helped get items for silent auctions, and helped moms find good babysitters.

Networking is the answer to your problem. If you need to meet more people, hire more people, recruit more people or sell to more people, you can either become an expert networker or hire someone who is. Why cold call when you can be walked in the back door? Working smart can save you time, and it can make you money.

Its time you start doing what the stars have known all along. It’s not who you know, but who you can GET to know that matters. Then its all up to you!
