The article summarizes the Hyperthreading technology as best as possible in just ten steps.
1. Hyperthreading (HT) is term coined by Intel for Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT).
2. Hyperthreading is meant for dual-core or multi-core processors like Pentium 4 with HT or Xeon MP.
3. The technology aims at better utilization of execution units in a processor which otherwise would be idle.
4. This technique is better than its predecessor Multithreading and Superthreading in the sense that in each instruction cycle, a processor can execute instructions from mutliple threads.
5. Hardware implemetation of Hyperthreading is not very complex as reported by Intel “Implementing HT took only 5% more die space in Xeon”.
6. Implemeting HT needs hardware resources to be divided into Replicated(e.g. Instruction Pointers), Partitioned (e.g.Queues) and Shared (e.g. Caches)
7. For actual performance gain, your applications have to hyperthreaded i.e. you have to parallelize your code.
8. Hyperthreaded applications use Shared Memory Programming Model. Most famous Shared Memory Programming standard is OpenMP (Open specifications for Multi-Processing), an effort initiated by Silicon Graphics Inc. and now supported by major industry players. OpenMP library is available for C,C++ and Fortran on both Windows and Unix platforms. OpenMP programming constructs consists of few compiler directives for parallelizing the code.
9. There are compilers and other automating tools that support shared memory parallel programming libraries like OpenMP. Some examples are Intel C++ Compiler, Intel VTune Performance Analyzer and High-Level tools from KAI Inc.
10. Hyperthreading does not necessarily increase performance. With wrong mix of code, it can even decrease performance.

With more and more business people taking their office on the road with them in the form of Smart phones, how does the new Motorola Q compare to the tried and true Treo 650 from PalmOne?
The advanced features of the Treo 650 include:
- A 640 x 480 resolution, 2x digital zoom digital camera.
- RealPlayer software that lets you listen to MP3 and RealAudio files.
- The ability to view Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments.
- The ability to edit MS Word and Excel files.
- Bluetooth wireless technology.
- CIF-quality (352 x 288 pixels) resolution video capture / camcorder.
- A backlit QWERTY keyboard.
- One infrared port.
- When this phone is connected to your computer via USB,
- Bluetooth or infrared, you can use it as a modem.
- PC synchronization with Windows Sync Or Exchange Server ActiveSync.
The new Motorola Q offers all of the above features, plus a few more. The Q has a thumbwheel, for single-handed use, and it has something that none of the other smart phones in the world have: the thinness of a RAZR. That’s right, Motorola packed everything you’re used to seeing on a bulky handheld, like the Blackberry or PalmOne Treo, and put it in a package that is 50% thinner than other smart phones.
While the fact that the Motorola Q is thinner than other smart phones, shouldn’t be the deciding factor in selecting a smart phone. It is for me; because the Q offers everything else the other phones offer plus coolness, which is a commodity in which I am distinctly lacking.
If you would like to compare the PalmOne Treo 650 to the new Motorola Q, you can find the PalmOne at http://web.palm.com/products/smartphones/treo650/index.jhtml and the Motorola Q at http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/q/index.html. If you would like to compare them side by side, you can do so at http://www.cellchecker.com.

Prior to the boom in technology, there were several predictions that the satellite phone industry would crash. Then in the year 1990, it happened. There were a lot of investors who have thrown millions into the satellite phone industry. With a confident presumption that there would be millions of subscribers who would purchase the product as an everyday gadget, all the investors were dreaming of their riches. And then the industry crashed.
But soon, the demand for the satellite phone picked up again. With lowered prices and cooler handsets, more and more people have found the necessity to own one.
Satellite phones, as the name implies, use satellites to get a signal or transmission. They can be used virtually everywhere. Unlike cellular - a phone that has a limited range - satellite phones allows you to call and receive calls virtually anywhere in the world. These are great for those living in areas where cellular networks don’t exist. There are still other countries that do not recognize this telecommunication system but time will come when the satellite service will be available all over the world.
The Iridium network is a leader in the satellite phone market.
The Iridium Satellite System is composed of three major components:
• The Satellite Network
• The Ground Network
• The Iridium Subscriber Products (This includes the phones and the pagers).
The design of the Iridium Network enables voice and date communication to be routed virtually to any part of the world. The voice calls and the data transmissions are transmitted from one satellite to another until they reach the satellite above the Iridium Unit (the handset). That is the time that the signal will go back to the earth.
The Iridium Satellite Telephone System is regarded as the only provider of truly global, truly mobile satellite voice and data solutions with a complete coverage of the earth including the oceans and the Polar Regions. This is one of the reasons why it is more expensive compared to other satellite phones.
With its convenient, portable, fixed mobile communications and the ability to monitor your business anywhere you are, Iridium is ideal for your day-to-day voice or basic data communications in some of the remotest parts of the world.
The question now is which phone to use?
This is where reviews come in handy. There are a host of reviews available in the internet showcasing the strong and weak points of each handset available. From these reviews of iridium satellite phones, you will be able to choose which one will be perfectly right for you.
Take the time to read the reviews and be completely sure before you decide which iridium satellite phone to purchase. Be connected wherever you are.

Cell phones are becoming more than accessories for communication. They come with a host of features. With increasing advancements in technology, these features are also increasing. Adding to their popularity is the host of freebies that could be inserted into a cell phone. Importantly, most of them are for free: cell phone software, free cell phone plans, free cell phone offers, free cell phone ringtones, free prepaid cell phones, and even free cell phones. There is even something known as free cell phone number search. But perhaps the most famous of these freebies are free cell phone games. They must be probably the most popular form of gaming the world over.
Gaming is in itself a megabucks industry, with developers betting big on the future of mobile gaming. Leading service providers are confident that consumers will spend big bucks just to play video games on their cell phones. They are being proven true, too, to a large extent. The mobile gaming industry is growing at such a rapid pace, that even games developed yesterday seem to get outdated in a matter of weeks. Poker, solitaire, soccer, juiced, bubbly quest - the list is long and is increasing at an amazing pace. Software developers are working towards making these games more and more realistic, so as to increase their popularity. Competition among service providers and handset manufacturers is also driving up the popularity of mobile gaming. Increasingly they are coming out with fabulous offers in the form of free games, either downloadable from the Internet or games which come with the simulation or which may be pre-programmed in the handset.
Cell phones have become almost handheld computers. One can even dare to say that these easy to play games have relegated the very purpose of cell phones to second place i.e., for speaking. Free cell phone games are here to stay.

We’re in the midst of a revolution - but many people don’t realize the full implications of it.
While telecommuting has been in existence since at least the nineties, the phenomenal development of laptops, PDAs, cell phones with digital cameras and instant messaging capability, and other devices has changed even that concept. Working from home rather than having to go into the office five days a week is a great concept, but actually somewhat limited these days. With public libraries offering broadband and eateries like Starbucks equipped with “wifi,” your home office doesn’t have to be at home at all, but can be at the library or even your local bistro.
Or how about another city? Electronic communications has become so sophisticated that, if your body doesn’t actually have to make an appearance at a physical location, you could accomplish your work anywhere. You could take a vacation without your boss even knowing it! Get out of bed in Paris, work for an hour or so over croissants and coffee at a sidewalk café, check out the Louvre, put in another two or three hours on a park bench, check out a local bistro for lunch, and so on. As long as you’re producing and sending in quality work, no one has to know where you’re producing it. Think of the freedom of literally having the world at your feet, every day.
Just one thing - if you happen to take a picture of yourself with that digital camera / cell phone combo - make sure the Eiffel Tower isn’t in the background.

Currently, most of us are using mobile phones. True to our nature, we have used the different features of these sophisticated gadgets to put a smile on our faces and that of others. We are sending text messages that are really humorous and listening to ring tones that would tickle our funny bones, every time the phone rings.
At present, a multitude of ring tones are easily available and can be downloaded in different models of mobile phone handsets. Mobile phone users can choose from monophonic ring tones, polyphonic ring tones, true tones, real tones, SMS ring tones, buddy name tones, caller id tunes, etc., according to their specific requirements. With the technological advances achieved in this sector, a high degree of customization of ring tones has also become possible. Users of mobile phones can give vent to their creativity and design some witty and humorous ring tones in many of the latest models of handsets. For instance, users are free to use their own voices or any other sound to create a number of personalized ring tones! Depending on their intelligence, wit and comic timing, they would be able to create some hilarious ring tones that are guaranteed to put a smile on the lips of anyone who happens to hear them.
Funny ring tones appeal to us for a multitude of reasons. Most of us are leading a fast paced life. Our lives are increasingly becoming mechanized and we have little or no time to engage our minds in playful pursuits. In such circumstances, the banter of a funny ring tone comes as respite and brings some moments of laughter in our busy schedules.
A case in point is the caller id tunes! You can download different type of ring tones and play them for different persons in your lives. Listen to the sound of these tunes and enjoy some moments of fun at the expense of your friends and acquaintances, some of whom you like and others you want to stay away from! Say for instance, you are spending a day in your apartment reading a book and enjoying some quality time all to yourself; and suddenly your mobile phone starts playing a silly tune! At that instance, you know that it is a senior colleague calling from your office and you smile and get prepared to tackle him and his trivial questions.
However, the idea of fun for a particular person is often quite different from that of the next one. Ring tones ringing in the wrong places or at wrong times can be funny for some of us. For other tech savvy individuals, the idea of fun would be the downloading of the latest ring tones to their sophisticated handsets. These people are attracted to ring tones because of the innovativeness of the concepts of the same. They are perplexed by the high levels of sound quality that are designed to emanate from some of the latest handsets and want these mobile phones as well as mobile phone ring tones for themselves. Only a few years back, it was difficult to imagine that mobile phones would showcase specialized features such as in-built MP3 players and digital cameras. It was also hard for someone to imagine the range and class of the audio quality of mobile phones as well as ring tones. But thanks to the technological breakthrough achieved in this field, all these ideas have seen the light of day and at present are an integral part of mobile phones.
Ultimately we can conclude by saying that most of us have a funny side to our personality that we would like to showcase to the world. This is possible through the playing of funny ring tones that can be either downloaded or created in some of the more sophisticated handsets. In this day and age of stressful lifestyles, the significance of these ring tones cannot be ignored. They help us to remain connected with the lighter side of life and assist us in maintaining our sanity in an increasingly complicated world.

For the past several years, municipalities across the country have talked about and even begun implementing free WiFi offering. Many critics of these plans have claimed that cities have no business offering free high-speed wireless access as it competes with local telephone companies, cable providers of broadband, cellular companies and even local small business owners that use free wireless access to attract customers.
Proponents of free municipal provided WiFi say that it will bring internet access to lower-income households, improve tourism and benefit businesses. There are benefits, but many of these do not pass even the most basic cost-benefit analysis.
Even with free internet access, the cost for a computer and wireless card are still a large barrier for many low-income households, but the “digital divide” is one that does need continued attention. A better program would include a program for providing refurbished computers, training and fixed line broadband at no cost.
General businesses use a tremendous amount of bandwidth and currently pay large fees for these services. If a municipality offers free access WiFi, business will begin to transition to the free service. With the increased load on the municipal network and decreased service provider revenue from the businesses, the service fees the municipality pays will increase drastically. As these costs increase, the general tax base will need to cover these services, which fundamentally spreads the costs among all, even those people and businesses that are not using the internet.
Some municipalities have proposed offering WiFi for a cost and simply providing free services for low-income households, but this still leaves the cost of the initial computer hardware as a barrier to internet access and moves the city into the position of a utility/service provider.
There is a noticeable benefit to tourism, especially business travel, when advertised, but most municipalities have only proposed these all encompassing wireless offerings.
Enter a simple but novel approach from Huntsville, Alabama. Many do not think of Alabama as a technology front mover, but Huntsville is home to 1) one of the country’s two U.S. Space Camps 2) Intergraph Corporation, 3) sizeable offices for Boeing, Northrop Grumman, LG Electronics and Lockheed Martin 4) Redstone Arsenal which houses several military and NASA installations, plus external associate firms 5) many other large technical installations and smaller R&D houses.
Huntsville’s approach to WiFi is to partner with Traveller Internet Solutions to offer a limited free WiFi solution to visitors of the Big Spring International Park, which covers the Von Braun Convention Center (170,000+ square foot center) and much of downtown.
Technicians are still fine tuning the service and will fully activate the links shortly. When completed, each user will be given three free house of service per month, with the ability to pay for extended service.
This three hour free offering will serve the need of most business and personal travelers and are projected to be a great new benefit for the convention center. In exchange for the right to offer and charge for extended services, Traveller provides the WiFi network, under municipal supervision, at no cost to the city. This arrangement also allows businesses and even the convention center the ability to work with Traveller to provide additional complimentary hours.
Other municipalities would do well to copy this arrangement from Huntsville. It provides wireless data access to visitors and residents for basic needs at little cost to tax payers, may even become a revenue stream from commissions on extended plans sold by the service provider and leaves open the possibility of helping low-income households access the internet.

When you hear that some of your business phones don’t work, you may need to replace them. Maybe it is a bad phone. However, if the employee says they can’t hear or be heard well enough, you should check a couple of simple things before you replace the whole phone.
Ask if the problem occurs on speakerphone calls or just when using the handset. If its only the latter, try taking a handset that is known to work. Put it on the phone with trouble. If it eliminates the problem, you need a replacement handset.
I believe that tens of thousands of phones are discarded by businesses each year that only needed a new handset.
By the way, you might try replacing the handset cord as well. This is less often a source of trouble, but it does happen and is easy to check. Yes, we carry handset cords as well.
If you want to replace a handset, you’ll need to know the color, the phone model and the phone system. Believe it or not, different handsets are required for phone systems from the same manufacturer. The Avaya Partner telephone systems has two completely different handset styles.
Handset replacement is to do by yourself. It will also save you time and money.
