{July 03, 2008}   Ten Weight Loss Tips to Ensure Victory in the New Year’s “Battle of the Bulge”

With millions of people making New Years resolutions to participate in the “Battle of the Bulge” here’s some useful ammo to help you adhere to your weight loss plan, keep you motivated and ensure victory:

1. Enlist

Just as new enlistee signs a contract that commits him/her to their military task and duty, similarly, if your goal is to lose weight, you too should sign a contract with yourself, your trainer, a friend or a loved one. Essentially a contract cannot be broken and there is usually a penalty to do so. A contract places the commitment to paper and the responsibility on you, which will increase your resolve and motivation to the task of losing weight. If you need to, assign a reward for the satisfactory fulfillment of the contract rather than a penalty. For example, if you attain your target weight, write in the contract that you will take a spa vacation to show off your “new” body. This is a form of positive reinforcement, which gives you an eventual goal to work toward and tends to work better than negative reinforcement like punishment.

2. Recruit backup

For many people the “battle of the bulge” is exactly that. Give yourself a leg up right from the start and recruit the services of a well-qualified (check credentials) personal trainer or exercise physiologist. These “officers” are experienced in their field and will offer the correct guidance, training and motivation to conquer the enemy (fat). If you cant afford this service, recruit the assistance of a friend or family member to offer moral support and motivation.

3. Know Your Enemy

To go into battle with no knowledge of the enemy is guaranteeing defeat. With the guidance of your “officer”, or on your own, find out information on fat loss. This may involve doing some homework on fat metabolism and basic nutrition. Learn about how to “identify” the enemy by being able to recognize fattening foods and bad carbohydrates and research topics like how to shift the scales toward negative caloric intake. Don’t be afraid of exploring a little of the science behind weight loss - the web is essentially a free of source of information - use it!

4. Know Thyself

Just as it is important to know and study the enemy, you must also know some information about yourself. Make a list of possible obstacles that may derail the successful implementation of your upcoming battle plan and jot down proposed solutions on how to deal with them. Forecast where you may weaken in your resolve. For example, if you have a weakness for scoffing Ding Dongs at midnight or certain situations make you more likely to eat junk food or drink alcohol uncontrollably like at parties. It may also be very helpful at this point to find out your EAR or Estimated Average (Caloric) Requirement. Your EAR gives an indication of the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current mass, taking into account the subjective estimation of your daily activity levels - for example, exercise participation and physical activity associated with your work. (Click here for a handy caloric calculator)

5. Develop a “battle plan”

With the help of your “officer” or with your own “top secret” information from your research, carefully devise a strategy to follow. Like many successful battle plans, attacks should involve multiple strategies. An obvious battle plan would be to begin a sensible “diet” to restrict caloric intake, yet does not border on starvation levels. This is decent single strategy attack, but if you really want the enemy on their heels, you need a multiple-strategy attack. Consider using the combined forces of diet and exercise to shift your energy intake levels to less than your expended energy levels. Resistance training will not only greatly add to your energy expenditure, but will also increase your lean muscle mass and as a result, increase your resting metabolic rate. A multiple-strategy approach such as this will greatly increase weight loss over dieting alone. Make a chart using colored pens to designate the multi-strategy attack plan. This will provide you a tactile image of your battle plan and help you stay motivated and in control. Remember the battle may continue for several months or possibly indefinitely, so adjust your plan accordingly and consider making permanent lifestyle changes concerning exercise and eating habits.

6. Set strategic and realistic goals

A successful battle campaign will involve setting goals of smaller victories to result in eventual victory. Setting goals will increase your motivation and adherence to the task and allow for assessment of progress. Sit down and strategize with your trainer or your partner and decide on achievable weight loss goals. Assign a time frame to achieve your “mini victory” and write them down on a chart. Check off every “mini victory” as you attain them. A rule of thumb for gradual weight loss that will stay off is to aim to lose about one percent of your body weight a week. The human body does not simply “let go” of its fat stores - it gradually releases them when caloric expenditure is greater than consumption. For example, if you weigh 225 lbs, you can safely lose about 2.3 lbs a week. A pound of fat contains 3 500 calories, so 2.3 lbs contains 8 050 calories. So in this case, look to cut about 1 150 calories from your EAR using a combination of diet and energy expenditure from exercise. If your battle plan involves resistance training (it should!), do not place a high priority on scale readings as this may lead to frustration. Resistance training will increase muscle mass (muscle weighs more than fat) and may confound scale readings.

7. Arm yourself!

At this point you will already be armed with a powerful array of non-tactile weapons - knowledge, moral support and guidance. Now, arm yourself by financially committing to either purchasing quality exercise equipment or a long-term gym membership. Buy a sensible diet book (for example, South Beach Diet) and a journal to write down your feelings, experiences on a daily/weekly basis if possible. Keeping a journal of the types of foods you eat and your feelings/attitude toward eating and exercise will help provide concrete evidence to identify signs of progress or regression and keep you on track.

8. Get out there and fight!

By now you will be prepared enough to face the enemy. Realize that the battle of weight loss is just that and that it will sometimes have to be fought tooth and nail. Use your weapons and resources to stick it out when your resolve begins to wane. Remain committed to yourself and your personal campaign and realize that others “back home” are supporting you.

9. Monitor your Campaign

Use your resources and the tips in this article to monitor the progress of your weight loss plan. Use a combination of body weight, waist/hip circumference changes and the results of your journal to get the “big picture”. See if there are any aspects of your battle plan that need “tweaking” or revision. A highly effective way of objectively monitoring your fat loss and lean muscle tissue gain is to monitor your body composition (% body fat, % lean muscle tissue and bone). Try to find a local personal trainer or fitness service that offers body composition tests. Body composition can be measured by a variety of different methods depending on the sophistication of the service. The simplest and least expensive method of determining body composition is by means of skinfold measurement. Other more sophisticated (and accurate) methods involve the use of Bioelectrical Impedance Assessment (BIA) equipment. For more information on BIA, click on the link at the bottom of this article.

10. Integrate a “new government” for your lifestyle

Once you have achieved victory and attained your weight loss goal, consider the lifestyle changes that you will need to make to maintain your goal weight. You may need to make exercise a part of your daily routine or continue to follow a sensible eating plan that restricts certain foods, or both. If your campaign was an extended one, you will most probably already have made some permanent changes to the way you deal with eating and physical activity. Also, if your battle plan involved resistance training, you will find it much easier to maintain your desired weight because of an increased muscle mass and metabolic rate. Realize that it was an uphill battle to get to the point where you are and plan to “do whatever it takes” to keep or even improve your physical condition.

This article has highlighted some basic strategies to help make your weight loss goals more attainable. Use these pointers and you are virtually guaranteed “victory!”

{June 29, 2008}   Anthony Loeff nonprofit volunteer is reporting screen readers

A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Almost 24 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. Next month Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is testing software applications for people suffering from blindness The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers.

Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. However, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. Further functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications.

Most legally blind people 59 percent do not use computers. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix. Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

{May 28, 2008}   Do You Believe in the Old Ways?

Pow Wow time is the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and make new ones.

Today Pow Wow are held all across the North American continent, from small towns such as White Eagle, Oklahoma, to some of the largest, such as Los Angeles, California. They can take place anywhere from cow pastures to convention centers, and occur year round. These festivals last only one weekend, but usually draw Native Americans and visitors from hundreds and even thousands of miles away.

Pow Wow is also a compilation of European folk magic that crossed the color line in America. During the 1940s, cheap newsprint editions of “The Black Pullet,” “The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses,” and the so-called “spurious” magical writings of Albertus Magnus were typically offered through the catalogues of Jewish-owned curio companies like King Novelty and Clover Horn, right alongside an assortment of policy players’ dream books and pamphlets on “The Art of Kissing” and “How to Make Love.”

However today I would like to talk about a completely different Pow Wow, neither sole Indian, nor solely European, but old remedies that were passed on from generation to generation. Many of these recipes still work today, except we don’t call them Pow Wow, but natural herbs, organic herbs, holistic medicine, and/or just good old common sense. Here are a couple of non-medical examples:

To mend broken glass: take a common cheese and wash it well, unslaked lime and the white of eggs, rub all these well together until it becomes one mass, and then use it. If it is made right, it will certainly hold.

Here is another one for all you chicken owners:

To make chickens lay may eggs: take the dung of rabbits, pound it to powder, mix it with bran, wet the mixture till it forms lumps, and feed your chickens with it, and they will keep on laying a great many eggs.

Interesting. I should try this one day when I decide to raise chickens.

You have probably heard of Shamanic healing in the Amazon or the traditional medicinal plants in the modern Quepoan society in Costa Rica.

For example at the core of Shamanism is a strong relationship with Nature and an understanding that our ultimate survival depends upon this relationship. Shamans work with trees, stones, the waters, wind, and with the spirits that reside therein. Their awareness of the sanctity of life and their ability to communicate with a multitude of life forms gives them knowledge that is otherwise unavailable. Traveling in the spirit realm they receive wisdom and great power allowing them to overcome seemingly unconquerable obstacles.

In an article by the WSU Today, Prof Clark says: “Based on his experiences learning from healers and medicine men takes time and participatory observation. Shamans don’t respond to direct questions asked by typical western scientists. Instead, one must become immersed in the culture and lifestyle over time to gain the greatest amount of knowledge.”

Now, think of the old witch doctors who in their native lands were or in part still are healers who treat maladies caused by witchcraft. The Witch Doctor is able to ward off witchcraft or turn it back upon the supposed sender.

Just think of Africa where the traditional healers have been using ritual in combination with herbal remedies to treat Africa’s people for generations. A number of these medicines seem to be effective where modern science has failed to find a cure. Yet for some reason, modern science is regarded as infallible, as an absolute truth. It is because of this faith in modern medicine that the traditional healers in Africa are now regarded as primitive witch doctors.

In going to over the Pow Wow, I noticed lots of human as well as animal, spiritual and non spiritual spells, wards and talismans. What an interesting book and I would highly recommend it, if for nothing else but interesting reading material. Great Christmas present, since it is the season that the days get shorter, while the nights are longer.

One last recipe since we all love a good beer:

To Make Good Beer: Take a handful of hops, five or six gallons of water, about three tablespoons of ginger, half a gallon of molasses; filter the water, hops and ginger into a tub containing the molasses.

Yummy. I guess I’ll try that over the holidays.

{May 27, 2008}   12 Ways to Make Weight Loss a Breeze

Is effortless weight loss possible?

Well, it certainly can be easier than it is. With more and more Americans on diets and just as many of them binging, there has to be a way to stop the extremities and just get down to what works and what doesn’t.

Here are 12 ways to make losing weight as easy as apple pie… well… maybe rice cakes!

1. When it comes to activity, one minute is better than none. If want to workout but only have 10 minutes, fine, just workout for 10 minutes. Don’t get stuck thinking that if you don’t have 30 minutes then it’s not worth it.

2. Get a positive support group. Not a bunch of people hanging around talking about how much they want a chocolate sundae, but surround yourself with people who are pushing hard for better health.

3. Walk after dinner. You can burn calories and speed up your digestion by moving a little after your meal. This is also a great time to spend with family or someone who supports what you’re doing.

4. Smile. I can’t tell you how important this is for weight loss. The more you smile the less anxiety you have. The less anxiety, the more you can relax and not reach for food to calm you down.

5. Visualize a thinner you. Spend time in the morning or at night visualizing yourself thinner and lighter. Think about how you’ll walk in a room, think about how you’ll bounce out of bed. If you can see it, it can happen.

6. Make a collage. Make a collage that represents the ideal you. Cut out pictures from magazines and newspapers that get you motivated and put them all together. Put your collage on the refrigerator or on your closet door so you see it once or twice a day.

7. Set small tangible goals. You should be reaching goals every week that you’ve set for yourself. Whether it’s lose one pound or eat 6 servings of spinach, make it achievable and keep track.

8. Eat something you love once in a while and don’t worry about the calories or the fat. Don’t look at this as a “cheat” but as something that you want to do. You will feel better about it and it won’t become a “forbidden” event.

9. Stop thinking about your diet. You should view this as a way of life. “Diet” thoughts lead to overeating and deprivation behavior afterwards.

10. Do exercises that you like. Too many people do exercises that they don’t like and then they dislike exercise. If you don’t like the treadmill, stop using it and find something you do enjoy.

11. Don’t watch TV. What does this have to do with dieting? It will help you reduce anxiety. Studies have shown that watching television raises levels of stress. This can be a trigger for overeating.

12. Eat cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper can raise your metabolism up to 8% for 2 hours after eating. This alone will not help you lose the weight, but every little bit helps.

{May 16, 2008}   Your Best Body Cleansing Detoxification Program

Herbal Detoxification is one of the key methods that people use to restore health and eliminate chemical toxins from their systems. There are many detoxification products on the market today. One of the best ways to eliminate toxins is with a herbal cleanse and supporting your body’s nutritional needs with nutrietns that support cellular health.

By conducting a herbal detoxification and continually feeding your body’s cells and systems the nutrients and antioxidants it requires to constantly remove toxic chemicals that are invading your cells and tissues you can regain your health.

Body Detoxification Plan

In March 2001, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unveiled the “National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals”, their first report on the level of 27 different toxins found in a cross-section of the U.S. population.

You are exposed to toxins no matter which way you put it, not matter where you live. They are in your home, in your water, in the air you breathe, in the foods that you eat.

Did you know that whenever you take a prescription or non prescription drug you are putting toxins in your body?

Whenever you drink chlorinated water treated with fluoride, you are putting toxins into your body?

How extensive are the added health risks? Nobody really knows. What is known is that toxic load is a cause of concern to many experts in the field of public health.

It has long been known that exposure to environmental pollutants and toxic agents are increasing and that this was unlikely to be good for anyone’s health.

Chemical exposures are stored in your body’s tissues. These chemicals, along with negative emotions and stress, produce an extremely adverse affect on your body. One of the best ways to eliminate toxins is through a body cleansing detoxification program.

“Debilitators” include, but are not limited to the following: heavy metals (mercury-amalgam fillings and fish are a major source), unnatural skin and hygienic products, antacids, toxic sprays such as pesticides, herbicides, other “cides,” paint fumes, and more.

Low-level exposures to these substances put our bodies under tremendous stress, perhaps on a daily basis.

New technology had made it possible to measure the actual toxic load carried in the bodies of Americans, not just the toxins to which they were exposed. This is just the beginning.

The CDC states that this survey will be conducted annually with the addition of 25 toxins each year. Soon we will have data on about 100 toxic chemicals present in our bodies. What will be missing for some time to come is the overall clinical significance of the presence of such toxins.

As an example, the Canadian Medical Association journal reported in 1999 that the incidence of some cancers affecting young males had risen 60% during the last 30 years and the evidence indicated that this increase was directly attributable to environmental pollutants.

On January 30, 2003, the EWG published “Body Burden-the Pollution in People, the first study to thoroughly analyze the amounts of synthetic chemicals in the human body.

In “Body Burden-the Pollution in People,” the EWG found a disturbing average of 91 different chemical agents in the people they tested and what’s worse, these toxins continue to rise.

Do you know that the governments are actually forced to set acceptable levels of PCB’s, dioxins, DDT, herbicides and many others in many of the foods and food supplements on the market today.

They studied a few individuals only 9. Of those 9 subjects none of them worked with chemicals, their bodies contained a vast array of synthetic substances. Altogether, EWG researchers identified a total of 167 different industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides in their subjects.

Many of these toxic chemicals in the study have multiple side effects, and previous studies indicate that even low doses adversely affect various organs and systems.

Is it any wonder we see disease conditions rising through the roof?

In these reports, here is what they found:
• 94 are known neurotoxins
• 86 are reported to disrupt endocrine functions
• 79 are associated with birth defects and abnormal development
• 77 affect reproduction
• 77 affect the immune system
• 76 can be linked to cancer

Being exposed to “Any One” of these chemicals poses a serious health threat.

Educate yourself and become fully aware of what these chemicals are and how they harm you. The EWG Web site (www.ewg.org) provides a wealth of information for consumers, including lists of toxin-free cosmetic products and information about pesticides in produce.

Chemicals are abound in our modern environment

How can we avoid them?

The simple answer is that we cannot.

What Can You Do To Combat the Ongoing Battle of Toxins?

All of us know when our lungs aren’t quite working right. We feel sluggish, and our heads feel foggy. It may be that we’re having an upper-respiratory infection, or some other problem.

But whatever it is, water will make your system work better, and more quickly take care of whatever the problem is. You will also feel better. The other thing water will do is keep your mouth and throat well-hydrated, because if you have an infection like that, chances are you will be coughing a lot.

Coughing is something we want to avoid. Like runny noses and sneezing, we think it’s embarrassing. But remember that coughs are there to help the body get rid of something, and rather than try to make the body quit, we should help the body. I don’t know about you, but I’d just as soon get over my coughing as quickly as I can. So start drinking water!

(The one time I would encourage cough suppressants — that is, medicine to suppress the coughing reflex — is at night. If you are having trouble sleeping because of constant coughing, take a minimum dose of cough medicine just before going to bed. Sometimes there’s a very small amount of drainage that’s not even noticeable when we’re awake. But as soon as we lay down, the “tickling” starts, and makes it hard to sleep. Your body also needs sleep. So feel free to take something for the cough in this circumstance. On the other hand, if you are coughing up large amounts of phlegm, don’t do anything to suppress the cough. Your body is getting rid of some garbage, and you don’t want to stop that).

Begin by drinking more water whenever you feel chest congestion coming on. Remember, drinking water cannot hurt you. And it will usually help get rid of the nasty viruses that give us the crud feeling. So you might want to begin doubling up on the amount of water you normally drink. If you normally drink 10 glasses a day, go to 20. Even 20 is not all that much, and you will be surprised at how much better you feel.

Another water tactic that helps a lot is steam. Most of us don’t have a sauna in our house, but you can easily create a sauna-like atmosphere, with no special equipment or preparation. This is the way to do it: go into the bathroom, and tightly shut the door. Plug the drain in the bathtub, and turn on the bath water full blast, and make sure the temperature is as hot as you can get it. (Don’t worry … you’re not going to be bathing in this!) If you can, plug the sink drain as well, and turn the water on there as well. Make sure you don’t have a fan going … you want the steam to accumulate. The inside of the bathroom should be as humid as a tropical rainforest! Now sit down, and breathe deep. Keep breathing until the steam has subsided. What you are doing is getting your lungs full of moist, humid air, and coating the insides of your lungs with the water. This is also a good tactic with a child who is having trouble breathing due to a croupy cough. Get the bathroom nice and steamy, and carry them in there (if a young child) or take them in there with you (if older) and let them breathe deep. Don’t be afraid to stay in for 15 or 20 minutes or more. This will help you (or your child) to breathe better, feel better, and your body will be the better able to loosen the congestion that makes them feel like someone’s standing on their chest.
