The history of diabetes goes back to 100 BS when it was first described as the separate disease: in 100 BS a Greek scientist mentioned it as a “mysterious disease”. It is funny and sad that this definition can still be applied to today’s medicine because the causes of diabetes and its complications are still to be explained.

The term “diabetes” originates from Greek: it means “outflow”; it means to describe “out-flowing of glucose” or “losing glucose” as one of the basic symptoms of the disease is the loss of glucose with urine.

In the 17th century physicians first found the way to diagnose the disease: the English doctor Thomas Willis was the first to find that people suffering from diabetes had the sweet taste of urine.

In 1889, Mering and Minkovsky in their experiments caused diabetes in animals by removing pancreatic gland - this was the first time the diabetes was controlled.

In early twenties of the 19th century, insulin was first used to treat a man with diabetes - this marked the beginning of the era when diabetes was first controlled. In 1979 the human insulin was created using the method if genetic engineering.

However we have still to learn to control the disease - as it still can be controlled but never cured.
