Many people when they first start determining whether or not they have a need or desire for spy gear wonder if it is legal. After all, spy gear is used to do a great many things, include investigate information that others would like to keep private. Such a use might suggest that purchasing spy equipment is illegal. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Even though some of the things people use spy stuff for are illegal, actually buying and owning the equipment is not.

If spy gear were illegal, where would bounty hunters and P.I.s get all of the equipment they need to do their jobs? In order for these private professionals to do their jobs, they need to have access to the right equipment. This means that law enforcement and government officials is not the only people who can buy spy equipment. However, it is important to note that they usually have legal reasons for invading others’ privacy, and you should carefully consider whether or not the uses you have for your gear are legal.

The most legal and eligible uses of spy gear involve the uses that protect property and home. Things like GPS trackers in cars and surveillance cameras on homes are practical uses of spy equipment that can help you protect your possessions and your family. Additionally, most places recognize that you can spy in your own home, and therefore it is acceptable to use a hidden camera in various places about the house in order to keep an eye on caregivers, teenagers, housekeepers, and guests. However, it never hurts to check and make sure these are acceptable uses of your spy gear before engaging in these practices.

In the United States, as well as many other countries with democratic forms of governments, individual rights are prized. It would not make sense in such cases to deny spy gear to the public while allowing the government to make liberal use of it. This means that it is legal to purchase, and even to use surveillance equipment and spy gadgets. However, it is up to you to make sure that what you are doing with your spy gear is not in violation of the law.

Not all states allow salary reductions made under Section 125 cafeteria plans or 401(k) to be treated in the same manner as the IRS code allows. In Iowa cafeteria plans are not taxable for income tax calculation; taxable for unemployment insurance purposes. 401(k) plan deferrals are not taxable for income taxes; taxable for unemployment purposes.

In Iowa supplemental wages are taxed at a 6% flat rate.

Escheat laws in Iowa require that unclaimed wages be paid over to the state after one year.

The employer is further required in Iowa to keep a record of the wages abandoned and turned over to the state for a period of 4 years.

Iowa payroll law mandates no more than 40% of minimum wage may be used as a tip credit.

In the Iowa payroll law there is no provision covering required rest or meal periods.

There is no provision in Iowa law concerning record retention of wage and hour records therefor it is probably wise to follow FLSA guidelines.

Pregnant with her first child, Jill could barely contain her excitement over the dreams and hopes she cherished for her unborn baby, whom she had already named Mara (she was so sure it was a girl). She practiced the lullabies she would sing as she nursed Mara close to her breast. She imagined how Mara’s eyes would light up on Christmas mornings. She dreamt of Mara’s first day at school, her first date, and her college graduation. She even imagined how Mara might look in her wedding gown.

Suddenly, on a bleak November morning in the fourth month of her pregnancy, Jill miscarried. Like a sandcastle swept away in high tide, her precious dreams dissolved in an ocean of despair. It turned out that a normally harmless medication prescribed by Jill’s doctor produced an allergic reaction, causing a miscarriage. Though Jill later gave birth to three healthy children, she never stopped grieving for her precious Mara.

Jill’s anguish is incomprehensibel to those of us who have never lost a child. Equally incomprensible is the grief our heavenly Father must feel when the dreams He cherishes for His beloved children never reach fruiton. Considering the wealth of potential residing in each of us, His heart must agonize over gifts that are never developed, callings that are never embraced, and purpose that is never fulfilled.

People often say, “God has a purpose for your life.” That’s true. But it’s also true that we have a vital part to play in whether or not that purpose is realized.

Just as newly conceived embryo needs the nurturing environment of her mother’s womb to gestate and mature, divine purpose must also be nurtured in a healthy environment. That environment is your heart - often referred to in the Bible as your spirit. And the condition of your heart will have a powerful influence on whether or not you reach your divine potential.

The Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Prov. 4:23)

Nowhere else does the Bible use the phase, “Above all else.” Clearly, guarding your heart should be a top priority.

Your heart is the wellspring of life. Whether or not the wellspring issuing from your heart brings forth sweet waters or bitter depends entirely upon you. From your heart flows purpose or mediocrity, success or failure, joy or depression. Your heart will define your attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, and choices — ultimately, they mould your destiny.

Heart Toxins

“You are what you eat” is not only a true maxim for physical health; it also applies to the heart. Regularly ingest “heart junk food”, and every area of your life will suffer.

A caring expectant mother would never intentionally harm her unborn child by ingesting toxic substances or refusing a nutritious diet. But it’s surprising how many people neglect caring for their hearts.

Just as physical toxins can damage an unborn child in his mother’s womb, heart toxins will hinder your gifts, dreams and purpose from maturing to their divine potential.

Heart toxins come in many forms. External sources may include books, TV programs, and Internet sites promoting themes such as violence, sexual perversion, selfishness, and hatred.

A counselor friend told me about a client who came to him for help, overcome with guilt because of intense sexual desire for his two young daughters. During the session, this man admitted reading pornographic materials, including those depicting sex between adults and children. He insisted there was no connection between his pornographic reading habits and the lust he felt towards his daughters.

“There’s nothing wrong with reading pornography,” he said. “It doesn’t affect me. It can’t hurt anyone.” He felt terrible guilt and confusion about the lust he had for his daughters. But he refused to see the link between the junk he was feeding into his mind and his perverted emotions.

Most sex offenders are avid consumers of pornography. This reflects a basic life principle: garbage in, garbage out.

Internal heart toxins are equally damaging. These represent thoughts and emotions such as anger, bitterness, worry, hatred, pride, and impure lusts. If you dwell on these negative thoughts and emotions, your faith will weaken and you’ll block the river of God’s Spirit from flowing through your life.

Heart Nutrients

A responsible expectant mother is not merely concerned with avoiding nicotine, alcohol and carcinogens; she is also conscientious about getting proper nutrition. She drinks more milk. She eats more protein. She may take vitamins or other supplements.

Likewise, we must invest the time to learn about the nutrients that will benefit our hearts. Following are three potent “heart vitamins” that will nurture your heart, build your faith, and empower you to embrace your purpose.

Prayer

Spending time each day in God’s presence will nourish your heart and inspire you with fresh vision.

Recently I went hiking with my sister and a friend in the mountains of British Columbia. The trail started at the creek bed of the Sinclair Canyon; then wound up, and up, and up. We were amazed at how different the mountains, valleys and canyon looked from different vantage points on the way up the trail. From the vantage point at the highest point of the trail, the canyon walls that had seemed so huge and overpowering from the creek bed now seemed small and insignificant.

Prayer takes you to the high vantage point of viewing life from the perspective of God’s greatness, rather than viewing it from the perspective of personal limitations and obstacles. Instead of looking up at your problems and feeling as though they are huge and insurmountable, you see them from the perspective of God’s power and majesty.

As you spend time in God’s presence and focus on him, your heart will be nourished with peace, grace and power - providing a fertile environment for your dreams to thrive.

Positive Thinking

Another key to nourishing your heart is to discipline your thought life. Our thoughts and emotions are inextricably linked. Next time you are feeling depressed or angry, check your thought life. What thoughts were going through your mind when you began to feel depressed?

The Bible says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Prov. 23:7) In other words, the person you become will reflect your thought life.

We must train our minds in much the same way that a soldier trains for military action. Like any soldier, you must be committed, disciplined and consistent. Disciplining your mind not only means immediately and aggressively rejecting negative thoughts the moment they come to mind; but also habitually training your mind to focus on positive, godly thoughts.

The Bible provides practical advice for our minds. “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.” (Phil. 5:8)

Creative Activities

Finally, nurture your heart with creative activities and hobbies. Ask yourself, “What stirs creativity, vision and inspiration in me?”

For me, spending time in nature refuels my creativity and nourishes my heart. Besides reminding me of the awesome majesty of my Creator, nature calms my spirit, renews my faith and inspires fresh vision. Playing the piano and writing are other activities that nourish my creativity.

If you love nature, schedule time on a regular basis to enjoy your favorite outdoor haunts. If you love art, visit art museums. If you love music, attend concerts. If you love flowers, plant the most extravagant one in the neighborhood. If you have always wanted to try painting, take a course. Who cares if you never sell a painting? That’s not the point. The point is to cultivate and express the creative nature that God placed in you.

Find at least one creative hobby and make it a part of your schedule. Never say that you don’t have time. You’ll be a better person and you’ll have more to give to others if you take time to nurture your own heart.

Never forget: All of life flows your heart. Your heart is the very seat of your dreams and the womb of your divine destiny. In light of that, I suggest you make a “healthy heart’ your number one priority.

There is a bittersweet quality that permeates the air in September. In the northern hemisphere, we say our reluctant goodbyes to summer. When September rolls around there is something in our early programming that kicks in. We gear up for all of the activities associated with fall. Kids return to school and we all begin to pick up the pace.

We never really do finish school while we are alive on this planet. We continue to learn life lessons and hopefully grow through all of our experiences. Much of our earlier training at home and school prepares us to face life as warriors or worriers. The good news is that we can learn to become more resilient if we are willing to do our “hope” work. That’s right. That wasn’t a typo. I meant “hope” work. Too many of us have been basing our lives for far too long on what is reasonable and evident rather than on faith and belief.

When I refer to faith, I mean that which is unseen, unproven and is in the realm of the mysterious. Faith requires our active belief. There may be things you are experiencing in your life right now that seem impossible to overcome. Hope is that expectation that the drought in your business, your finances, your relationships, your health could all change in an instant. Don’t be deceived by the evidence to the contrary. Hope is what will expand your thinking and challenge your beliefs about what is possible.

According to Greek Mythology, the gods gave Pandora a beautiful box with instructions to never open it. Pandora’s curiosity was stronger than her will and she couldn’t resist opening it. Once opened, all of the ills of the world came flying out of the box. No one has ever been able to contain them again. However, at the bottom of the box, almost overlooked, was Hope.

Who would have believed that 309 people could survive a
burning plane crash last month in Toronto, Canada? Everyone
called it a miracle. I also believe it was evidence that Hope is alive.

You can look at the devastation that took place along
the Gulf Coast and only see suffering or, you can look again, and see that Hope is alive there, too.

With the unstoppable globalization of economy, careers and culture are breaking barriers and making a borderless world. Nowhere is this more apparent than in careers. Internet has literally become the window to the world. As information and opportunities abound, the choice in careers is no longer limited to a region, but spread wide across the world. This has opened the field for newer pastures and wide range of job opportunities. Consequently, the need for learning foreign languages has become necessary. Besides, in the highly competitive business world that we are in, knowing additional languages invariably gives you the added edge.

But learning a foreign language has its own subtle intricacies. The pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and the use of proper syntax are just some of the major problems confronting any learner. However, there are some sound techniques for mastering a language. Ideally they are best done using memory techniques.

One of the basic methods is to associate the foreign word with a similar sounding word in the language you are very fluent in. For e,g., the French word for rug/carpet is ‘tapis’. You can associate the word with tap in English. Similarly, the equivalent of grump in French is ‘grogon’. By associating ‘grogon’ with the word groggy in English, which means sleepy and tired, you will be able to remember the French word.

Another memory technique is to use images for improving your foreign vocabulary. So for the above two words in French - ‘tapis’ and ‘grogon’, you can imagine taps being open and water running on a rug or carpet, and use the image to reinforce the meaning of the word ‘tapis’. In the same way, you can use a grumpy looking sleepy face to remember ‘grogon’ to convey the meaning grumpy. The image of drooping eyelids and mouth can be visualized to remember ‘grogon’ as grumpy.

Yet another well-known technique is using town language mnemonics. Since the basic vocabulary of a language pertains to everyday things - things that you will find in a town, village or city - you can use the different areas and objects to link the images and the corresponding foreign words. You can associate all the food-related words by visualizing a familiar supermarket and substituting the images and the words of food items sold there with the corresponding foreign language words.

Likewise, all foreign words concerning animals and birds can be remembered by imagining a zoo, and linking the images of different animals and birds in the zoo to the corresponding foreign words. In this way, you can cover different working zones of a town, village or city such as library, park, shopping mall, etc., and master the related foreign words associated with each sphere of activities. This way you will reinforce your foreign language vocabulary thoroughly.

Incidentally, Tony Buzan in his book ‘Using your Memory’ lists 100 basic words that are elementary to any language learning. This could be used to learn the primary words of the foreign language.

In all these methods, it would be obvious that memory has a chief role to play in learning a language, more so for increasing your vocabulary. You need to be familiar with the words in order to use them effectively. Since Mind Mapping technique was born out of the need for enhancing memory, Mind Maps serve as an indispensable memory tool. Indeed Mind Mapping is the most ideal method for improving your memory. Using Mind Maps to learn foreign language is a highly useful and proven technique for mastering a foreign language. And deploying this technique for mastering foreign language can only speed up the process of learning.
