{October 30, 2008}   Melting Snow

I love the sounds of melting snowplink, plink, ting, ting, ting, a staccato drip on sloped metal roofs, the occasional loud crack of a giant icicle, the bubble and gurgle of the mountain brook as it swells and tumbles over polished rocks on its way to the valley below.

I love to gaze at the majestic white peaks with knowing wonder that they will soon morph into greens, oranges, purples, reds and a myriad of ever-changing hues, a dance between the sun, the clouds and the fog, a waltz of beauty and color that never changes partners yet never replays itself, each day a masterful original.

I love the consistency of change, the reminder that in all matters winter never fails to turn into spring, the spring of health, the spring of growth, the spring of a relationship that at points seems as cold and hopeless as the frigid tundra.

Then we usher in summerthe heat, the fire, the passion and the burn, an escalating blaze of sweaty emotions that rise, intensify, crescendo and lead us to the fallthe tumble of all that grew, drifting leaves that blanket us and prepare us for that annual time of reflection when the chill sends us scurrying within.

Winter uncovers spring.

Spring gives way to summer.

Summer melts into fall.

Fall clings desperately to its life lines, like a drunk nursing his last swallow or a child that down to her last bite of ice cream adds water to fill the bowl again, oblivious to the loss of flavor, wanting more where none can be had except in the world of pretend.

Winter sets in regardless, sometimes gently, often with an unleashed fury that shuts us all down without mercy, paralyzes us.
We take cover and hide from its elements.

Still, the seeds lie in sleep, buried below in wait, patient and un-intimidated.

In victory we find the cause for defeat, the fat summer celebration that makes us lazy and lethargic, asleep at the wheel.

In defeat, we taste the bitter dirt that jars us awake, wrestle to get up, find the strength to remember that the only difference between a rut and a grave is its depth.

In defeat we define character, a constant tightrope walk to temper and harden for strength while somehow, some way, clinging to fleeting vestiges of softness, kindness and compassion, elusive companions too often quashed in the fight.

In defeat we discover raw self.

The wise lick their wounds, leave the gashes exposed, observe, re-group, learn, heal and start over.
The foolish grope for the closest band-aid.
Winter doesn’t care.

Wait.
Is that a loan white flake in the air?
Could winter grace us with a few added moments of introspection and preparation, a last gasp of quiet before we reap all that was sown, before the buds reveal themselves and us in this year’s unforgiving tally?
I think so.
We still have time.
Let it snow.

{October 29, 2008}   Shame and Guilt: A World of Difference

Learning to distinguish between two powerful emotions - superficially very similar but in practice, very different - is essential not only for healthy self-esteem but for fulfilling interpersonal relationships.

Jill and Sharon (not their real names) worked on the same projects in close proximity to each other in a relatively small office. Their work was very pressured with one tight deadline to meet after another. Small wonder that the two of them were continually treading on each others toes and from time to time, the very palpable tension between them would boil over into heated arguments.

One day they had such a fierce confrontation that if they hadn’t been the mature adults that they were, it might very easily have become physical.

The next day, Jill didn’t report for duty. Neither was she at work on the following day - nor the one after that. When her boss and her fellow workers made enquiries, they discovered that for some time she had been suffering, on and off, from a serious illness that she had hidden from everyone.

When Sharon learned of this, she almost went out of her mind. The last spat between the two of them kept replaying itself in her head. Maybe she was responsible for the sudden deterioration in her co-worker’s health? Even assuming that the disease had been afflicting Jill for a long time already, perhaps Sharon’s biting sarcasm and the force of her anger had weakened Jill further and made the condition worse?

It took many soothing words, a great deal of patience and hours of gentle explanation on the part of Sharon’s sympathetic but firm husband to get her eventually to snap out of her alternating hysteria and depression. He repeated over and over again that while the unkind words both Sharon and her colleague had hurled at each other were certainly not to be condoned, it was unreasonable and illogical to accept blame for Jill’s deteriorating health.

Most importantly, explained Sharon’s husband, the overpowering feeling of guilt that was driving her to distraction every moment of the day was preventing her from functioning properly and was serving no one’s interests - not hers and certainly not Jill’s.

I recently wrote a short article that I called Shame Should Be a Badge of Honor, which somehow hit a raw nerve for many and attracted a lot of interest. I decried the lack of healthy shame in today’s society, a lack which leads to people committing dishonest, indecent, immoral and unethical acts under the public gaze in broad daylight without as much as batting an eyelid.

In it’s purest form, shame is a positive, healthy phenomenon. It is rooted in the desire for self-improvement and involves working with the intellect. It’s all about personal responsibility, and is an elevating experience that provides an impetus for growth and promotes human dignity. It ultimately leads to enhanced interpersonal relationships.

Irrational Guilt, on the other hand - in the sense that I’m talking about here - is not about self-control, but rather the reverse. It’s a debilitating and even crippling experience that erodes self-esteem and has no positive outcome. It’s not about the intellect. It’s about the heart ruling the head in the most negative sense.

In the end, rather than bringing people closer to their fellows, it creates barriers between them. This is surely a point of crucial significance.

In practice, how do we ensure that positive shame will never degenerate into irrational guilt? Sometimes it’s far from easy, as we see from Sharon’s unfortunate episode. In extreme cases, professional help may be required, especially when recurring guilt feelings are precipitated by one or more traumatic incidents in a person’s past life.

Generally speaking, though, there’s one yardstick that’s useful in many different situations in determining whether a certain feeling, state of mind, or attitude is positive and constructive or unhealthy and destructive. What we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves the following question:

“Honestly, what’s motivating me? Is it my ego or am I motivated by a sincere interest in the the party I’m involved with or in the people around me?”

Public liability insurance is imperative because all corporations are at peril to some quantity. Albeit nothing dreadful has ever gone on with your firms property does not mean that it won’t at some point in near the future. If someone is hurt, or their material goods missing, it is your duty to appropriately refund them. This expenditure can easily be terrifically dear, depending on the exact brand of case. Looking for a Public Liability quote? Contact Insured Risks today.

Yet, you do have a number of chances to guard yourself against this chance. Choosing public liability indemnity allows you to breathe slightly easier. Even if a customer claim is very costly, the insurance organisation will be around to provide a security net. It is their contractual duty to make sure you are safeguarded from claims & legal payments. This leaves you free to focus on actually doing business, instead of worrying about what may well happen. The following are numerous instances of times when public liability indemnity will come in handy.

Directors of plumbing organisations more often than not get the job finished fast & easy. Yet occasionally something might go badly wrong. Should you unintentionally smash up a client’s water pipes while on the job, damaging property such as personal computers and flooring, public liability indemnity will be there to pick up the invoice.

An additional example is that of an advertising firm. If a customer were to sprain an ankle in your workplace, even if it is not your fault, you would be held accountable. Luckily, with public liability indemnity you would not have to resolve the claim whatsoever.

In a comparable situation, physical damage caused to a passerby by a worker on a building site is the responsibility of the firm’s owner. This type of claim can easily get exceptionally pricey indeed, unless you buy the right protection.

The ongoing teachings are exemplified in an understanding and execution of two ideas, which I will briefly describe:

Karma: the Buddhist interpretation is in the words and actions of the individual. It means that good work brings about a good rebirth, and that each rebirth is a reflection of the good living and good deeds in the prior life. That is the deeper meaning of Karma, the Buddhist, and some New Age, thinking. It also applies to actions within one lifetime, what goes around comes around. And while Right Action should be a way of life and fundamentally without expected reward, it is true, I assure you, that Right Action does have its rewards beyond the spiritual satisfaction. So long as it is not an intended consequence, Right Action returns to the giver a hundred fold, a thousand fold!! And Buddhists understand this and practice it as a genuine way of life.

Dharma is the Natural Law governing all. It encompasses all of the individual parts that make up the universe, everything, including the emotions. A partial list: earth, fire, water, air, color, sound, organic life, the senses, impulses, will, reasoning, consciousness, fame, beauty, riches, true and false teachings, sexuality, sleep, hunger, illness, growing, aging and dying. the physical world Dharma is the way to Nirvana, the ultimate achievement and realization of self, the refuge, the eternal. And it is through Right Action, The Eightfold Path, the Four Noble Truths and avoiding extremes that the Buddhist Faith is so tacitly successful. It is an overwhelmingly great faith.

About the Bodhisattva, one who denies himself, the Nirvana, to work for the good of others. He is the helper of all. He postpones becoming a Buddha so that he can help others. Even as a concept, this speaks to the aspirations of the Buddhist.

Thailand is the central economic hub of Southeast Asia and the most developed of the neighbors surrounding it (Myanmar “Burma,” Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia). It hosts a 75% pure Thai population, followed by Chinese (11%) and others. The principal religion is Buddhist (93%) with a Muslim minority (5%).

The most outstanding asset in Thailand is its people, who are very friendly with a genuine helpful attitude towards each other and, especially, towards visitors. I am sure that the warmth of the Thai personality is rooted in the Buddhist faith, which encourages right thinking, moral actions and beneficial social attitudes. The enlightenment goal taught by Lord Buddha is practiced, at least in part, by most Thais. That deep rooted and honorable way of life is the reason that this third world country is more of a developing country than its regional cousins. And, in spite of a now eight year recession, the spirit of the Thais blended with their resourcefulness will insure a recovery and a place of leadership in Southeast Asia. Buddhism contributes much to our quest for World Peace.

A man is known by the company he keeps. We have heard that phrase so many times. Our folks have cautioned us often with that in our silly childhood. Do we heed to that advice in our business? Where do you hang out? What is your business surrounded by?

Have you heard about Christian Huygens?

This genius of early 17th century did something awesome. He discovered a law of resonance. A law which was well accepted in physics later and now is being applied to brain science.

Huygens kept few pendulum clocks on the wall of his room with each clock swinging independently. He discovered that after few cycles of independent cycling all the clocks started swinging precisely synchronized rhythm.

And he gave the world a law that seems inherent law of the nature.

He summarized that waves from clocks produced vibrations in the wall which in response produced waves that synchronized the rhythm of all clocks.

Scientists have now extended that law to working of brain waves and results are very -very promising.

Have you ever wondered that successful peoples are surrounded by similar ones? Is it a coincidence that when like minded people are at work the success is more likely!

Let us use this phenomenon to bring success to bring success to your business. It may be a home based business, online business or for that matter any venture.

To succeed in your business
- Avoid Naysayers
- Surround yourself with who have done or believe this can be done.

This is a much overlooked aspect of business. Your company definitely determines the outcome of your business dream.

Naysayers send you negative vibrations like This cant be done, You cant do this, Oh! It is impossible!

Your mind reacts to them like walls did to the clock and produces similar waves. Before you realize you already have lost faith in your dream. Naysayers will rotten your business. Keep as much away as possible. Realize your own vibrations and vibrate with belief.

Hang out with the other type, the positive ones. Believe in your business and converse with similar minds. You will be amazed with the difference it makes.

Your mind is the workshop of your success. Every business is first borne in the mind before the mind takes action to shape its vision.

Your mind is the powerhouse of ideas which will make your business a success.

Your mind is the source of your strength that enables you to carry the burden in difficult times.

Feed your mind the good food. Avoid stuffing in the junk food.

When you fall it is important to know and believe that many others have fallen and rose again. That is the attitude which will determine success. One must develop that attitude.

If you hang around with naysayers you will drown further because your own mind refuses to provide the necessary strength.

Success might be on the next turn waiting for you.

If you are negative in your approach you are sure to stop before that turn arrives.

So set your clocks again. It is time to vibrate with right frequency.

{October 24, 2008}   Anam Cara - Going Beyond The Good

In Corrogue I receive a gift of love.

I awake to find a gift in my email inbox this morning. It is a quote from part of a poem. This is a poem by Mary Oliver entitled “Wild Geese.” Let me share this extract with you. I find it simply beautiful.

“You do not have to be good
You do not have to walk on your knees
or a hundred miles through
the dessert repenting.
You only have to let the
soft animal of your body love
what it does.”

I am learning to allow the soft animal of this body to love what it does.

This means entering into deeper and deeper trusting. It is a return to allowing the wisdom in the body to be conscious and to play. This is the way that children live. As Divine beings they do not have to be good but only let the soft animal of their bodies do what they do. This is their dance of life. It is their dance before they learn to stumble into the life of the ego.

There is a joy in such allowing. It allows the well spring of your being to surface. This is a form of magic. It is a form of unity. It is good only because “it is”. It is not judged or labelled but simply allowed to flow and do what it does.

You do not have to be good.

Here the poet goes beyond judgement. She is telling you that you only need “to be.” Nothing more is required of you. You are, she says, “OK.” Here is a poet who knows. Here is a poet who graces you her knowing. She is telling you that you only need allow love to do what it does. This is wisdom. It is wisdom that comes from a trusting heart.

In this rush into the noise and haste of the 21st Century many of us are on our knees. We are walking but each of us carries a limp. Many of us are more than one hundred miles into the dessert. This is the desert of our unknowing. This is walking in the desert of separateness from “all that is.”

We walk blindly when we do not know who we are and why we are. We can live all our lives asleep in armoured bodies that defend us against our true reality. If we lose contact with our soul work we are already lost in the desert. This is primarily the desert of social consciousness. Too many travel this dessert without ever getting a glimpse of the beauty they are.

Yet there is freedom.

We can, as the title of the poem suggests, be “Wild Geese.” We can take wing. We can be warriors and take flight from the limitation of our social consciousness. To do so we need to enter our wildness. This is the wildness of our hearts imagination. This wildness is different from the wilderness of “never enough.” This is the wilderness we lock ourselves into each day. We need to be wild and authorise our life and destiny. We need to quest and ask our own questions.

It seems, according to the latest health forecasts, that more and more of us are headed for a life of emptiness.

Forecasts conducted in the UK suggest that by 2015 the main disease afflicting the population will be depression. In my opinion this is an epidemic due to the loss of soul. It is the loss of feeling for life. This happens when there is felt little or no purpose in even living the limitation we call “our life.” This suggests to me that we know there is something not quite right. We know in our heart of hearts that there is something missing.

You have been betrayed.

The title of this poem by Mary Oliver is “Wild Geese.” In Ireland the term “Wild Geese” is a symbol of betrayal. “The Flight of the Wild Geese” refers to the time when the Chieftains of Ireland fled the land to go to other shores. We too are left. We too have been betrayed. We have been taught to betray “our being enough.” Each of us needs to reclaim our birthright of joy and step into that other room that is our essential self.

A step on the way to this essential self is to allow the soft animal of your body to do what it does. It has its own “inner telling sense.” It is amazing. It knows in ways the ego has forgotten. It moves us beyond what we term commonsense. Allow some softness in the body. Allow yourself to trust more the movement of the energy through your body. Learn to become the dance of this soft animal of your body.

Each morning when you wake up become aware of this soft animal of your body.

Just lie in bed. Learn to scan your body consciously without judgment. Feel each muscle nerve and sinew. Breathe deeply and slowly and when you are finished say, “Thank you.” For the first ten minutes of the day be in love with this soft animal of your body. If you do not love it then it is more difficult to love totally. It is more difficult to be the dance of Eros.

This exercise goes along way to helping prevent dis-ease and despondency. It raises the vibratory rate of this soft animal of your body. You can begin to feel those good vibrations. You begin to feel fine and refined. This is a simple exercise in allowing your body “to be” and for you “to be” in this body that your soul has gifted to you.

Remember you do not have to be good. You only have to wake to the wondrous being your already are. This includes being aware of your body and allow it to be the holy instrument it is. Remember that the best you can do is let go and Let God. Just let it be.

{October 24, 2008}   The Ant Philosophy

Over the years I’ve been teaching kids about a simple but powerful concept - the ant philosophy.

I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing four-part philosophy, and here is the first part: ants never quit. That’s a good philosophy. If they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them; they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, they’ll climb around. They keep looking for another way. What a neat philosophy, to never quit looking for a way to get where you’re supposed to go.

Second, ants think winter all summer. That’s an important perspective. You can’t be so naive as to think summer will last forever. So ants are gathering in their winter food in the middle of summer.

An ancient story says, “Don’t build your house on the sand in the summer.” Why do we need that advice? Because it is important to think ahead. In the summer, you’ve got to think storm. You’ve got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun.

The third part of the ant philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.” And the first warm day, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day. They can’t wait to get out.

And here’s the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All that he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the “all-that-you-possibly-can” philosophy.

Wow, what a great philosophy to have - the ant philosophy. Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can.

To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

{October 23, 2008}   Tending the Fire

In old buildings there was a boiler room where men stood shoveling coal or wood into a furnace to keep the whole building warm. If they didn’t tend to the fire, the place went cold. The same is true in our lives. We need to tend the inner fire so our lives do not go cold.

Made for Success is based on the fact that humans are made up of three parts: The body, the soul and the spirit. The Body is that part that lives in the physical world. The Soul is the mind, will, and emotions. The Spirit is that part of us that transcends this life and is able to commune with God. It is my belief that success comes from the inside out. That is, it starts in the spirit, which affects the soul, which enables the body to do what we need it to to achieve success. With this understanding, it is imperative that we tend to the fire of the spirit on a regular basis. I thought I would share with you this issue a couple of ways I do this, in order to keep my spirit strong.

I read every day from a book that focuses my mind on spiritual things. This usually happens in the morning, though any time is sufficient. Sometimes it is the first bit of time I am at the office. This gets my day off on the right track and gets my spirit in the right place. You might say, “I wouldn’t know where to start.” Let me help. One thing I do, is to read from the book of Proverbs in the Bible. It is full of practical, spiritual advice! And to make it easy, there are thirty-one chapters there. If it is the seventh day of the month, guess what chapter I read? Exactly. Another book I have found to be helpful is a book called Face to Face, which you can order at your local bookstore or through Amazon. It is essentially three months of short daily bible readings. And it is non-sectarian, so you don’t have to worry about a bias.

I also pray every day. Now, in the field of self-improvement there is a lot of focus on doing it yourself, disciplining yourself, etc. But I know that I need God’s help in every area of my life - and I ask Him for it on a regular basis!! Praying brings me back to what is important, and gets me the help and strength I need.

I involve myself in a church. I know, some of you are thinking, “Church people, no way.” Well, sometimes, I couldn’t agree with you more! But there a couple of things that being involved with a group of people who share your religious beliefs does for you. One, it gives me strength to have others who encourage me on that path. The other is that I have found that the times I have grown the most as a person have come in times of being involved with the frailty of humanity. It isn’t when everyone is behaving perfectly that I grow. That doesn’t stretch me. What stretches me is when I am living in a community and I have to tolerate others and forgive others. So even the weakness that is inherent in living in a community of faith can become a strength if we make it so. Whatever community of faith you are involved in, make it your goal to grow when others fail.

Let me encourage you. Tend to the fire of your spirit. It is the first step to a successful life. Without it, you may achieve all sorts of things in this life and when you get there, ask, “What it the meaning? Where is the purpose? Where is the happiness?”

Wouldn’t it be nice to see your black and white photos in full color? Learning to create and edit old photos is fairly easy and very worthwhile. Digitally restored photos can be used to make digital scrapbooks, posted to Web sites, shared through email, and printed for gift-giving or display.

To achieve this effect, we will need to colorize using Paint Shop Pro. According to Bill Brewer, “colorizing is a feature built into PSP that keeps the luminance values (the bright and dark parts that make up the recognizable image) and colors the image with one color. The image to be colorized needs to have a color depth of 16.7 million colors, and it can be in full color to start with (reduction to grayscale is not required before colorizing). Using that command brings up a dialog box where you have control over the hue and saturation, with a preview. I suggest you DON’T use that menu item to colorize images. Instead use the more powerful HSL adjustments accessed with the Colors>Adjust>Hue/Saturation/Lightness… command. That way, you have complete control over the hue/saturation/lightness, and the color preview is much better than what you get with Colorize.”

To start off, get your photo ready. Begin by scanning your black and white photo into your PC. Make sure that your picture is straight and if not, use Paint Shop Pro’s Straighten tool to “uncrook” the image. Next then would be running the One Step Photo Fix by clicking the Enhance Photo button in the Photo toolbar atop the screen and choose One Step Photo Fix. Try to clean up whatever dirt or scratch that you may see in the picture.

Now, moving on to the next part. Working in layers. Choose the Layers, Duplicate tab to make a duplicate of the image you want to colorize. We can now make color changes to the top layer without affecting the original image underneath, letting us adjust the intensity of the colorization by playing with the layer’s opacity.

Now for the final part, you may choose to use either the Freehand Selection toll in Smart Edge mode or you may opt to use the Magic Wand. Set Feather to about 1 pixel, and select one of the faces. Once done, click on the Flood Fill tool and set the Blend Mode to Color in the toolbar at the top of the screen. For a typical Caucasian skin tone, set the Red, Green, and Blue levels to about 215, 190, and 150, respectively, then click OK. Now click Flood Fill to colorize the selected face. You can repeat this process for all of the skin in the image.

Then select the clothing and background and add color to as much or as little as you wish. When you’re done with the image, you might want to adjust the overall intensity of the colorization. To do that, make sure the Layer Palette is open (if it isn’t, choose View, Palettes, Layers) and then double-click on the Copy of Background layer–this is the one on top that we’ve been painting. Then you can use the Opacity slider in the layer’s dialog box to change the color effect. When you’re satisfied, click OK to keep your changes.

Above simple instructions from Dave Johnson is very easy to follow and is very helpful for the particular purpose.
